BACHELOR'S GUIDE FOR THEIR PLANT PARADISE

Plants? Garden? Responsibility? Care? Don't really fit in a bachelor's house, isn't it. At least that's what we all think. "I like plants but obviously I can't have them here- it's a bachelors pad.", I was told by a friend. Why not? I wanted to say, but chose otherwise.

Plants in house can give you the peace you will never know about till you have one. They re the perfect "to go place" for all moods. To have a companion on bad office days, to have a cheering element on gloomy days, pot yours today. No day is better than today to get started. So gear up, and thank us later.

But how?

Potatoes are one of the easiest plants to start with from your kitchen and don't even require a lot of care. They sit so beautifully in the balcony and their dense foliage is a treat to watch. Their flowers are so pretty that you will wish to see them at all times once you have it. So I suggest everyone to start with planting a potato and then slowly and steadily expand their plants.

Getting your Potato ready

We all bachelors have old potatoes lying in our vegetable baskets that we once bought in hopes of cooking, but never really ended up doing anything about it. These potatoes have grown potato eyes on them. You have them too, right? Perfect.

But if you don't, you can always make one. Take a potato and keep it aside for a few days. These will grow eyes and you can then use them.

Let's get Planted

Take that plastic container that came with your food delivery. Yes! We have a plenty of them lying around for many reasons. Make 5 small holes in it with a hot knife. Add soil to it. You can either buy the soil from a nearby nursery or you can just go and get it from the society garden or any nearby construction site, but first seek for the permission if you decide for the later one.

Fill half of your container with this soil. Cut the potatoes in smaller pieces with eye and place them on this bed of soil with the eye facing the sky. Cover the entire container again with enough soil to cover the potatoes.

Water!  Water!  Water!

Keep this container on a window sill or balcony and water it every morning while brushing your teeth. Multitasking!! This way you'll never forget to water it and also it won't feel like an additional job. In a week or so, you'll start to see the plant sprouting. That's when you know it's time to get yourself a pot and some more soil.

Get yourself a pot with some soil in it from a nearby nursery. When the plant become at least 3-4 inches tall, transfer it to your pot and keep it in the balcony or near a window that gets enough sunlight. Water this everyday just like before.

Golden Tip

Pinch the top pair of leaves 2-3 days after you transfer it in a bigger pot. This will stop the plant from growing only vertically and help it have a dense foliage.

Food for your baby

A few  days after you sow it, your love for this green beauty will be just like that of a parent. It's time to give your baby some food now. Do yourself a favor by buying a banana and eating it. Don't throw away the peel. Cut the banana peel in small pieces. Dig the side of the pot to form a 4 inch deep ring on the periphery. Evenly spread out these banana peels and fill back the soil you had dug.

You can also add these banana peel in an old bottle. Fill the bottle with water and put the cap lightly. Use this as a fertilizer by mixing it with water.

You can also add store bought fertilizer or your home made manure from the kitchen waste.

I Promise You Your Best Companion

I promise that this green baby will only bring comfort, peace and joy in your life. Very soon you will fall in love with this plant and probably sit near it every day after office and/ or with your morning tea. You'll start your day by watering it, admiring it and thanking yourself for having it.

Enjoy having this beauty in your home.
